I can’t quite believe that we are fast approaching the end of another cricket season but as we’ve already had the first league game of the football season at St James Park then it must be the case. Why does time seem to fly by as we get older ? It can’t of course , but it does feel like it sometimes!
At this point it would be easy to get side-tracked and start to discuss the surprising appointment of England’s record goal scorer as manager of our friends down the A38 in Plymouth or how long he might survive in the job based on his and the clubs record last season – Wayne will be hoping that time doesn’t fly by.
Back to the smaller red ball and Devon cricket has been saddened by the fire that this month has demolished the clubhouse and pavilion at the beautiful Heathcoat ground at Knightshayes – without doubt the finest setting I’ve played in and I’m sure I’m not alone. All good wishes to Heathcoat CC as they try and rebuild.
On the field of play there have been victories over Lympstone CC, Nynehead CC, Blacksmiths and Artizans CC, defeat to Sidbury CC and a Tie (second one this season !) with Broadclyst CC. The Hammett boys provided an entertaining moment in the Nynehead game when a ball from Jack appeared to catch the edge of the bat before being caught behind the stumps . The batter claimed it had hit his thigh pad , Umpire Kittow was no surer than the rest of us and having given not out, young Jack started a muttering, at which point said batter had a word with Jack, father Hammett had a word with the batter and then Ben Peters (who can get involved at ease in any debate) suggested that the batter should stop rolling his eyes in a disagreeable manner – I think that’s what he said anyway. Fortunately the temperature had dropped a degree by the time we sat down to discuss the evenings match over a Thatchers!
Our End of Season celebration takes place on Sunday 8th September at 2pm with a bbq following an Under 50s vs Over 50s game , all welcome, bring the family, bring the dog .
