Well, we have to start with a mention of global warming! We have just come through a showery June and early July to now hit temperatures approaching 30 degrees, almost too hot for cricket. And just when we thought we would never get the hay made, its drying as soon as we can turn it. Good news for the cattle for next winter.

After the rain of recent times it was no great surprise that the bowlers came out on top in last nights match at Tuck Mill .
Batting first Millers innings was glued together by a patient 20 not out from Shane Tout, supported by 27 from Jason Wood and 18 from Dan Rugg, closing on 94 all out with just seven shots breaching the boundary ropes and Bob Adam’s returning very impressive figures of 5-12.

It never ceases to amaze me how quickly the weather can change at this time of year- so from my piece last month when I was fretting about the damp weather, we have moved to a new situation whereby the Skipper/Plumber and I had a conversation yesterday about the most effective way to water the wicket as its starting to crack . Well after a very dry April there was something predictable about the start of the cricket season, so after a couple of dry but somewhat chilly weeks we are now in the middle of a damper spell. That should not be confused with the dampening of enthusiasm among our squad for whilst we have only managed two games to date they have resulted in a 100% away record, with wins coming at Clyst Hydon (when it felt like about minus 5) and down on the Jurassic Coast at Branscombe, when it was a bit warmer. Update from TMCC – March 2021

As I type this I’m looking out over a very wet cricket field with a very full River Tale lapping along the boundary . Its that time of year when the sheep are allowed in so the outfield is gradually turning to mud – it never ceases to amaze me how nature can turn a sodden muddy mess into the Payhembury equivalent of Lords in just a couple of months. Well, we play cricket on it and you can buy a pint, perhaps after that similarities with Lords are a bit more limited.
