Here we are in the second half of May, The Millers season hasn’t had the brightest of starts , our record reading something like:
Lost to weather -3, Lost to Oppo-3, Won-0. An optimist might call these results a “mixed bag” and prior to this winter I always thought I was one of those optimistic types but having spent much of today dodging yet more showers to try and get a home game on, I’m really starting to wonder whether its time to join the glass half empty brigade and when something good happens you can knock me over with a feather ( I am what you might call a “useful size” so the feather is going to have make a decent effort).
Important then to focus on the positives so far this year – A dozen cracking Ruby Red calves delivered with only a single phone call to the vets, over 100 surprisingly strong lambs kept alive through the extraordinary efforts of Libby and helpers, when Jupiter was doing his best to drown them in mud.
(Editorial note- Not sure if Jupiter was the roman god of weather, storms etc, happy to be corrected). We took a break from pig breeding this winter after getting fed up of picking up dead piglets squashed by their mother – I know- lightweight.
Back to The Millers, we have lost three games to Clyst Hydon (too chilly for us), Sunsets ( too misty despite leaving Payhembury in bright sunshine) and Nynehead (travel sickness after crossing county border) despite our best efforts and stout performances from David Kittow (all other Kittows are injured again), Jason Wood (the mans a legend) and the Hammett brothers. Interestingly, Hammett the younger who has only just joined the squad already seems to be outscoring Hammett the elder, it will be interesting to monitor their performances over the coming weeks. We are a ramshackle bunch of plumbers, farmers, wannabe farmers, builders, wannabe builders, marketeers, Mole Valley Reps, and solicitors from Burnley amongst others, and whilst the cricket is an important part of what we are about, we are fortunate in that we also enjoy one anothers company and dare I say we miss each other over the winter months – well, I miss the boys, they may not miss me!
