I buy in beautiful Angus Cross calves at three weeks old from a local dairy farmer and over the next couple of years they graze contentedly at Yellingham Farm. No rush, I just let them come on naturally.
Three of my bullocks were looking stunning and I knew that the time was fast approaching when they needed to be ‘moved’ on. One was to be slaughtered and the meat sold locally, and to my guests who always love taking home some delicious beef. The other two are destined for Exeter market to be sold as ‘stores’.
I can’t say I enjoy taking them to market as after a couple of years you certainly get
attached to them. I always take them in the day before to limit the stress of moving them as much as possible. It works just fine as they are extremely well looked after overnight at the market and seem calm when I arrive to see them sold. They looked stunning and their jet black coats were gleaming. They came through the sale ring early and I was as proud as Punch when they fetched an extremely good price. The remaining bullocks are still at home enjoying their days just grazing, chewing their cud and growing on strongly. Time to think about more calves!
